少女彭涞在旅游中误入一个神秘的洞窟，里面藏着中华古籍《山海经》。彭涞好奇地取下《山海经》来阅读，不料因此解开了书本的封印，山海经中的各种奇妖异兽从书中跑了出来。为了平息这场骚动、并将山海经还原，彭涞踏上了回收山海兽的旅程。山海兽们跑出书本后，在世界各地肆意捣乱，闹得城市鸡飞狗跳。彭涞巡游各地，努力回收各个动物。鸟兽们自然不愿意乖乖返回经书，每次双方都要经过一番战斗。回收的山海兽可以供彭涞召唤并借用其能力，其中一部分山海兽更是变成了可靠的伙伴。最后彭涞成功回收了全部山海兽，挽救了现实世界，回到父母身边的彭涞变得更加坚强自信。
