《西瓜炮》根据刘征泰的同名民间故事改编，编剧凌纾，导演靳夕，摄影朱丁元，人物造型设计曲建方，1979年9月美影摄制完成。影片描写清末“小刀会”的孩儿兵利用卖西瓜同敌人斗争的故事。影片中人物造型具有浓郁的民族风格，影片主创人员根据出土的俑、民间玩具和京剧脸谱等传统文化，采用夸大头部和眼睛比例的变形手法，使人物造型古拙浑厚而带有稚气，富有“偶”味，收到了是木偶而不是摸拟真人和“真象其人”的艺术效果。
